Breaking: Malawi FA President Walter Nyamilandu Elected to FIFA Council

Malawi Football Association President Walter Nyamilandu elected as the African representative to the FIFA Council for the Anglophone Linguistic Group.

Malawi Football Association President, Walter Nyamilandu has been elected by delegates at CAF’s 12th Extraordinary Congress as the African representative to the FIFA Council for the Anglophone Linguistic Group.

The Malawi FA boss won the post after defeating South Africa Football Federation president Danny Jordan by 35 to 18 votes in the second round of voting at the continental assembly currently ongoing in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

The gap in the FIFA Council was created due to the resignation of Kwesi Nyantakyi (Ghana) who resigned from his position last June.

The election went to the second round after three candidates including Me. Nyamilandu (23 votes), Jordaan (16 votes) and Tanzania Football Association president Leodegar Tenga( 14 votes) could not obtain an absolute majority vote.

Prior to the elections, two candidates, Elvis Chetty (Seychelles) and Nick Mwendwa (Kenya) withdrew from the process.

The FIFA Council (formerly the FIFA Executive Committee) is an institution of FIFA (the governing body of association football, futsal and beach soccer). It is the main decision-making body of the organization in the intervals of FIFA Congress. Its members are elected by the FIFA Congress. The council is a non-executive, supervisory and strategic body that sets the vision for FIFA and global football.
