Kenyan Premier League giants AFC Leopards on Saturday launched a 51-seater bus from Chinese manufacturing firm Golden Dragon.
The bus was donated by a prominent politician and will be used for the team’s transport to and from training and match fixtures.
It was delivered through an international fundraising expert, Nelson Sechere, who is a consultant with the African Capacity Building Foundation — a specialised agency for African Union.
Speaking during its launch at State House Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta assured the team for inspiring the local youths by demonstrating that it is possible for individuals to utilise their God-given talents to improve their livelihood.
“We thank you and we are happy for what you are doing not only for yourselves but for the inspiration and hope you are giving to your fellow youth,” said President Kenyatta.
“The most important thing is being a role model. And you as a youth are a role model and we appreciate and support that.”
Present during the launching ceremony was Club patron Timothy Wanyonyi, club chairman Dan Shikanda, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed and her Devolution counterpart Eugene Wamalwa.
Leopards have been struggling financially since SportPesa withdrew their sponsorship in August last year following a prolonged tax dispute with the government.
They have since lost some of their key players during the mid-season transfer window, but the club performance in the league table has not been affected as much.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the club is in discussions with potential to investors from Britain, Mexico and China in a bid for a sponsorship package.
The process is being led by Sechere with the main aim of making the club financially stable.
The acquisition of the bus makes AFC Leopards the only club in the country with two ultra-modern buses.
