Burundian Side Le Messager Shifts Energy to President Cup

Burundi Primus League side Le Messager has now shifted all its focus and energy to the President Cup after crashing out of the CAF Champions League on Wednesday 5th December.

The Ngozi-based outfit suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg against Egyptian side Ismaily, who later downed them 2-1 away in Cairo to progress on a 3-1 aggregate.

Speaking at the club’s official portal on Monday, Le Messager veteran midfielder Rahim Nsengiyumva said that their only chance for a continental ticket remains on winning the domestic cup, admitting that they have surrendered this season’s league title.

“Some clubs Aigle Noir and Musongati are largely ahead of us this it is hard to catch up. Our aim for the moment is to finish among the top four,” said Nsengiyumwa.

“We now want to see more of that as we head into the President Cup as it the only trophy at stake for us,” he added.

Cerdic Dafy scored Le Massager lone goal in CAF Champions League through a penalty, which was not enough to cancel the three goals scored by Ismaily.

The Egyptians will face 2008 CAF Champions League runners-up Coton Sport of Cameroon after they got knocked out ASF Bobo Dioulasso of Burkina Faso on penalties.
