CAF Champions League: Wydad AC Move Level on Points with Sundowns

Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club beat Nigeria’s Lobi Stars 1-0 on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club beat Nigeria’s Lobi Stars 1-0 on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to move level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of Group A of the 2018/2019 CAF Champions League.

A perfectly converted Mohammed Nahiri spot kick in the 20th minute gave Wydad a narrow win, moving them alongside Sundowns on six points apiece at the top of the group.

The penalty was awarded in the 18th minute when Mohammed Ounnajem was fouled in the penalty area. The goal remained the only goal in the first half with both teams unable to score another goal.

Stars found their pace in the second half in an effort to get an equalizer, but Wydad’s defense was up to the task, putting them in a comfortable position with one goal ahead.

Wydad should have extended their lead after they were awarded another spot kick, but Ounnajem saw his low effort hit the outside of the post. Despite Wydad’s penalty miss, Stars could not recover to level things up, thus leading to the collection of all three points by the Moroccan side.

Goalkeeper Ahmed Reda was awarded the Man of the Match award for his “wonderful” performance and keeping a clean sheet.

Both Wydad and Lobi Stars will return to Champions League action on February 12 with the Wydad host Lobi Stars in Rabat.

Wydad are atop of the group with a goal difference ahead of Sundowns who hammered ASEC Mimosas 3-1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane on Friday night
