The Confederation of African Football (CAF) first-vice president Constant Omari arrived in the country Sunday morning ahead of an inspection tour of facilities which will host CHAN 2020 finals tournament.
The seven-day visit by CAF officials starts today through next week on Monday and will see the delegation tour the facilities that will host the next year’s three-week tournament
On arrival at Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport, Omari was received by FECAFOOT president Seidou Mbombo Njoya, who also doubles as the vice-chairman CHAN 2020 Local Organising Committee.
While in Cameroon, the CAF Inspection team will inspect the stadiums, training facilities and hotels in the four cities which will host the continental tournament including Yaoundé, Douala, Bafoussam and Garoua.
The visitors will also hold meetings with the Local Organisation Committee as well as the steering committees before addressing the media on Monday next week at the FECAFOOT offices.
CAF stripped Cameroon of the hosting rights to this year’s African Cup of Nations (Afcon) citing delays in infrastructural preparations, but the country has since intensified preparations ahead of the 2021 edition and the Chan 2020.
Ethiopia withdrew as hosts of CHAN 2020 and CAF directly awarded the hosting rights to Cameroon. Earlier this month, the host country created a 12-man committee to supervise and report on the state of advancement of sporting and accommodation projects for the tournament.
However, there have been concerns about Cameroon’s capabilities in hosting the tournament as there has been political violence in North-West and South-West regions which are dominantly occupied by English- speaking communities.
Sources at CAF indicate at the end of the mission they will confirm Cameroon’s capacity to host the competition.
There are already rumours going around of a Plan B where the rights may be taken from the Central Africa nation as Algeria and Gabon are ready to take over the hosting.
