CAF Confederation Cup: Gor Mahia Players Down Tools Ahead of Berkane Clash

Gor Mahia players are on a go slow ahead of Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup first leg quarter-final match against Moroccan side, RS Berkane.

The players are protesting their unpaid allowances and winning bonuses. Each player is reportedly owed around Ksh. 120,000 (approximately 1,200 USD) in arrears.

Coach Hassan Oktay and his staff reported at Camp Toyoyo Grounds on Saturday morning for their final training session but to their surprise, none of the players turned out for training.

“We are here but not even one player showed up. This is frustrating because we have a very important game tomorrow and we needed to prepare well before the match. This has been happening every time but there’s little I can do because they are demanding what’s rightfully owed to them,” coach Hassan Oktay said.

It’s not the first time Gor Mahia players are striking over unsettled dues. In 2018, the Kenyan champions had to field a makeshift side in the final matches of the season after senior players downed tools.

In March just before the final group match against Petro Atletico, the players were once again on strike and the management had to pay their dues before they agreed to honor the game
