CAF Discloses Date For Champions League Group Stages Draw

The draw of the CAF Champions League group stage will be held on Tuesday 28 December 2021 at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt at 11:00 GMT (13:00 Cairo local time), the CAF announced on Wednesday.

According to a statement on the CAF’s official website, the draw of the CAF Confederation Cup’s  group stages will also be held at the same event.

The 16 teams through to the group stage of the CAF Champions League, will all be placed in four pots, which will be drawn in four groups.

However, clubs cannot be drawn against teams from their own country until the semi-finals or clubs they faced in the group stage, meaning there is no possibility of Mamelodi Sundowns facing Amazulu, while Jwaneng Galaxy and Sagrada Esperanca will be seen as the most generous possibilities to draw.

The sixteen teams will be drawn into four groups of four. Each group will be played on a home-and-away round-robin basis. The winners and runners-up of each group advance to the semi-finals.

Al-Ahly, the defending champion, booked his place in the group stage at the expense of the National Guard, the champion of the result, with a total score of 7-2.

The Red Devils won the last edition of the African Champions League for the second time in a row, after defeating the South African champion Kaizer Chiefs.
