Suspected armed robbers attacked players of Cameroon top-flight side Dragon de Yaounde in Stade de Municipal de Bamenda on Wednesday.
The bus carrying players and officials had just arrived at the stadium for their Elite Ligue 1 fixture against PWD Social Club de Bamenda when three armed men approached the driver and showed him where to park.
Not knowing that they were robbers, the driver did not hesitate to follow the instructions of the armed men.
Immediately after parking the bus, the three men asked the players and officials to line up before robbing them of valuables such as phones and cash. No one was hurt during the incident.
Confirming the attack, Dragon de Yaounde’s sports director Mabouang Imandi says by that time police were not yet deployed at the stadium to ensure security.
“When we arrived at the stadium almost two hours before the match as per regulations, we found three well-armed individuals at the gates of the stadium,” he said as translated from French.
“They showed us where we should park the bus. Their attitude led us to believe that it was the members of the protocol. At that time there was no security team at the stadium.

Despite the attack, Dragon de Yaounde agreed to go ahead and play the match, which they lost by a solitary goal.
Dragon de Yaounde are currently at the bottom of the table with 27 points with PWD on the top of Cameroon’s championship with 44 points after 26 round of matches.
PWD Social Club are based in the city of Bamenda, which is in one of the two English speaking regions in Cameroon, where secessionists have been fighting government forces for almost three years in a bid for independence.
