Cameroonian footballer Guillaume Nkendo Tchoungang has been incarcerated in Burma for several weeks following his involvement in cash fraud.

Cameroonian footballer Guillaume Nkendo Tchoungang has been incarcerated in Burma for several weeks following his involvement in cash fraud.

The 32-year-old striker was arrested at the airport together with his accomplice while trying to leave the South Asian country.

Tchoungang was said to have received $500,000 from a Burmese trader who was interested in buying land, but it turned out that the piece of land in question was not for auction.

The former Albacete forward’s mother claimed that his son had been locked up in a prison cell together with 50 prisoners since March 25 but he had not been presented in court.

“As a family, we were informed by one of our friends that on March 25, our son was arrested in a Burmese airport due to alleged involvement in a scam, “says the lady.

“I call on the Cameroonian authorities, concerned about the living conditions of their fellow citizens around the world, to help us. He defended the Cameroonian colors, and we cannot leave him in this suffering.”

Guillaume Nkendo is not new to controversies. As a player in 2012, he was cleared in a high-profile match-fixing trial along with Nicolas Nkolou and Stephane Mbia.

Four years later, he was arrested over an unlicensed gun found in his house in Spain during a police raid.
