As expected, South Africa Premier Soccer League outfit Cape Town City have parted ways with coach Benni McCarthy following a spate of poor results.

Consequently, the club has installed former Ajax Academy gaffer Vasili Manousakis as the caretaker coach as the club prepares to announce the new head coach in the next few days.

McCarthy was handed his dismal letter on Monday morning hours after the Citizens’ 1-0 loss to Maritzburg United, which saw the club drop to 13th positon after nine games in the league.

“Cape Town City Football Club has terminated the employment of coach Benni McCarthy, with immediate effect following a run of performance that saw the club win two in the last 18 games,” the Citizens said in a statement.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “The club thanks Benni for his service over the last three seasons and wishes him well in his next endeavour. He now becomes an integral part of the club’s history and are proud of the successes we shared together.”   [/perfectpullquote]

McCarthy took over from another former South Africa international, Eric Tinkler who then left the club in June 2017 for SuperSport United.

The 41-year-old had recently worked as an assistant coach at Belgian Pro League side Sint Truiden and before completed his UEFA A coaching licence.

The UEFA Champions League winner with FC Porto in 2004 remains one of South Africa’s greatest exports having also played for Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United.

McCarthy was runner-up on the English Premier League scoring charts in the 2006-07 season with 18 league goals (24 in total) for Blackburn.
