Carlos Teixeira Is Voted In As The New Guinea-Bissau FA President

Carlos Alberto Mendes Teixeira has been elected as the new president Guinea-Bissau Football Association (FFGB).

Carlos Alberto Mendes Teixeira has been elected as the new president Guinea-Bissau Football Association (FFGB).

The former chairman of Estrela Negra de Bissau club beat his main rival Fernando Tavares in the national football body’s elections held in Bissau on Wednesday.

Teixeria amassed 36 votes to Tavares’ 12 votes with other three candidates garnering no votes in the repeat elections.

Interestingly, Taixeria had pulled out of the contest in favour of “incumbent” Manuel Lopes Nascimento a few weeks ago.

One candidate, Paulo Mendonca, stunned delegates when he withdrew from the race in protest of the winner candidacy.

The anticipated elections finally went ahead after world governing body FIFA reportedly threatened to suspend Guinea-Bissau due to violation of electoral code.

Teixeria made it known that he will deliver on his pre-election promises when speaking on Radio Jovem Bissau.

“I am very glad that the Assembly has given me the mandate to lead football in this country for the next four years,” Teixeria said.

Last month, Tavares declared himself as the Guinea-Bissau FA president and took the oath of office at a ceremony that was held at the port of Alto Bandim in Bissau.

He was forced to change his decision after FIFA intervened and threatened to ban the nation from participating in football activities unless the polls are repeated.

Teixeria will take over the mantle of the running of Guinea-Bissau Football from Manuel Nascimento Lopes who was banned from football-related activities for 10 years over an incident of mob justice.

The ban was imposed by the world football governing body FIFA after its independent ethics committee went through information provided including video material.

Nascimento was also hit with a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs Swiss (about 93 thousand Euros) for the offence.
