Immediate former Carthage Eagles coach Faouzi Benzarti has slammed Tunisian Football Association after he was informed of his sacking on Saturday.
Tunisia fired Benzarti just four days after he helped the Carthage Eagles qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 68-year-old guided Tunisia to a 2-1 victory over Niger in Niamey last Tuesday to book the Eagles ticket to Cameroon with two games to spare.
Speaking to a local news station based in Tunis, the veteran trainer who was only appointed in late July, did not hold back in a scathing attack on the Tunisian FA.
“I was informed of the news via a phone call,” he said. “This is un-dignifying to me and to Tunisian coaches. They would not have done this had it been a foreign coach.
“I gave everything up and came here, answering a call of duty when my country needed me. My results speak for themselves – two wins away and one victory at home. This was uncalled for.”
“My results and my titles speak for themselves. It’s the third time this has happened to me. Whenever there’s trouble in the national team and things aren’t going well, they bring me in, to ease people’s tension and then get rid of me.
“Wherever I go, I succeed despite all the haters. I am not a toy in their hands and I refuse to be treated that way,” he added.
Tunisia Football Federation confirmed assistant coaches Mourad Okbi and Maher Kanzari will take charge of Carthage Eagles’ match against Egypt 16th of November for the fifth round of the AFCON qualifiers.
No reason was given for the shock dismissal of Benzarti, who had previously worked at Wydad Casablanca, Esperance and Libya’s national team, among many others.
Tunisia currently lead the qualifying group with 12 points. Egypt lie in second place with 9 points, with the difference being Tunisia’s 1-0 win over The Pharaohs in the first round of the qualifiers last year.
