Burundi suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat by Uganda in a tough 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier played on Saturday 21st September in Bujumbura.
Uganda got their goals through Vianney Ssekajjugo, Muzamir Mutyaba and Mustafa Kizza at a full-capacity Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium.
Cranes stunned Swallows when they went ahead in the 13th minute through a powerful header from Wakiso Giants attacker Vianney Ssekajugo.
Swallows started seeing more of the ball after the 20th minute-mark, with Iddy Musermu and Raoul Vyamungu getting little joy in the final third.
Most of Uganda’s attacks came courtesy of Allan Okello and Fahad Bayo down the flanks, where both wingers managed to get beyond their opposing fullbacks, but the final ball let them down.
Meanwhile, Burundi failed to register a single effort on target in the opening 45 minutes, despite their dominance.
Okello, who struggled upfront in the first half, almost doubled Cranes’s lead in the 63rd minute, but his strike was cleared off the line by Onesime Rukundo.
Burundi almost levelled matters minutes later, but Cedric Urasenga’s header crashed against the upright.
The Swallows should have equalised in the 67th minute, but Faustin Ndikumana failed to hit the target from point-blank range.
Uganda then doubled the lead in the 83rd minute, as Mutyaba extended their lead with a finish from three yards out, after an impressive run through the middle, and a one-two.
Minutes later, Halid Lwaliwa almost made it three, but after a good break and run, his chipped attempt hit the crossbar and bounced back into play and was cleared.
Abdallah Mubiru’s side then got a third in the 88th minute, courtesy of a close range finish from Mustafa Kiiza, scoring at the second attempt after his first was saved and rebounded back to him.
