The long drama in the 2017/2018 Ethiopian premier league has finally come to an end with debutants Jimma Aba Jiffar FC emerging as champions.
Jimma’s triumph come after it convincingly defeated Adama Kenema 5-0 in the final match of the season. The final league match was a decisive one between Jimma and defending champions Saint George FC. Both teams were leveled on 52 points and +19 on goal difference apiece after 29 matches.
It was Jimma that triumph as champions after St. George FC beat Hawassa Kenema 2-0 which saw both teams ending the season with 55 points from 30 matches, but Jimma had the better goal difference (+24 vs +21).
Jimma’s striker, Okiki Afolabi was the hero of the day after he scored a double brace in his team’s 5-0 victory. His four goals also earned him an individual accolade as he walked away with the league’s golden boot. The Nigerian striker bagged home 23 goals in 30 league matches.
Jimma will represent Ethiopia in the 2018/2017 CAF Champions League, while runners-up St. George will represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup. St. George was targeting its fifth consecutive league title, after it captured the last four editions of the campaign.
Meanwhile, Ethio-Electric, ArbaMinch Ketema and Woldia SC are the three sides that have been relegated from the Ethiopian Premier League in the 2017/18 season.
