Belgium-based Cyriel Dessers has revealed his disappointment at being snubbed for the latest Super Eagles squad, despite being in his best form.
The Genk striker was overlooked for the back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone set to be played this month.
The 25-year-old was handed his first call-up by Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr for their international friendly against Tunisia and Algeria but was surprisingly overlooked in the provisional squad despite his incredible performance in Belgium top-flight league this season.
Dessers netted his third league goal last weekend in the win against Eupen as he continues to deliver eye-catching performances in his second year with Genk.
“It was nice to be on the score sheet again this weekend. I felt it’s been a long time coming for me and I hope to build on this goal in my subsequent matches,” Dessers said in an interview with AOIFootball.com.
“On not getting a call up for the National team for games against Sierra Leone, personally I was not happy after knowing I did not make the cut.”
Dessers was born to a Belgian father and Nigerian mother and pledged his allegiance to the West Africans in December 2019.
He joined Belgian First Division A side Genk in June after spending one season at Dutch Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo where he scored 18 goals across all competitions.
The forward started his career with OH Leuven’s youth team and was promoted to the senior side in 2013.
He also played for NAC Breda and Utrecht before moving to Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2019.
