Egyptian giants Al Ahly secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Jimma Aba Jiffar of Ethiopia in a CAF Champions League first round match in Borg El-Arab in Alexandria on Friday.
Playmaker Nasser Maher got the Red Devils off to the best possible start when he blasted home a low shot in the seventh minute, from Karim Walid’s well-threaded supply that came of the post.
Minutes later, Hamoudi played a great ball to Marwan Mohsen, who beat Aba Jifar’s defender, before putting the ball past the goalkeeper, making it 2-0.
The first half was totally dominated by the visitors with Aschalew Girma being a constant thorn in the flesh of the Ethiopian league champions.
Marwan Mohsen could well have added a third goal five minutes before the break after being played through by fellow striker Mohamed Sherif, but his effort was kept out by the home team’s crossbar.
The home side picked up from where they left off in the first half, with Hamoudi going close to scoring on two occasions in the opening stages of the second.
That proved to be Hamoudi’s final involvement as he made way for Walid Soliman, with one eye on the return leg duel.
Soliman also missed a scoring opportunity as he failed to convert a low cross when well-positioned to score and had a shot denied by the post on the 80th minute.
At the other end of the park, the Al Ahly defense were seldom threatened, with Girma and Tewardos tiding up well in front of goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy.
Al Ahly now head to Addis Ababa needing to win or draw by any result to secure their place in the group-stages.
