Egypt Ends Its Premier League Without Any Promotion Or Relegation

Egypt has become the latest African country to cancel the rest of its domestic league season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Egypt has become the latest African country to cancel the rest of its domestic league season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Al Ahly and Al Mokawloon, who were the top two sides when football was suspended in mid-March, have been given a ticket to represent the country in the African Champions League.

Pyramids and Zamalek will represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup, according to sources close to the federation.

No team will be relegated from the top flight, the source added, thus giving a relief to Wadi Degla, Misr Le Makassa and FC Masr, who were staring at playing in the lower division next season.

The country’s top clubs were not too keen to see the league called off completely as they feared the loss of sponsorship revenues.

It is the sixth time that Egypt’s domestic competition has been cancelled.

The 1954/55, 1970/71, 1973/74, 1989/90 and 2011/12 campaigns were also axed for various reasons.

So far, Egypt has confirmed over 11,000 cases of COVID-19 which shows that the situation is clearly evolving day-by-day compared to 52 cases that were there before the league was put on hold.

Cameroon, Angola, Burkina Faso, Congo Brazzaville, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Mauritius and Niger have already cancelled the rest of their league seasons as African football grapples with the impact of the coronavirus.
