The Egypt Premier League is on the verge of resuming two months after it was halted owing to the coronavirus outbreak.
Sources close to the Ministry of Youth and Sports indicate that plans for the return of sporting activities in the country are on the final stages of preparation.
Egypt Premier League clubs have been allowed to resume training starting from next Saturday (June 20th) after the latest stage of “Project Restart” was approved on Monday.
This was after the plan for resuming football in North African country was approved by the government, with league resumption date expected to be on 25 July.
Testing for the coronavirus is reported to have taken place for the Premier League clubs over the last few days and will continue throughout the training period.
The training protocols were presented to players and managers last week before being rubber-stamped during Monday’s announcement by Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi.
Other rules in phase one include players not travelling with anyone to or from training, while the use of public transport and team vehicles is also banned.
Al Ahly are reported to have welcomed the decision to resume the league and said they will support the system of playing remaining matches on a home and away basis.
The Club of the Century was leading the race at the top of the championship with 49 points, with Arab Contractors and Pyramids FC occupying the second and third positions.
The resumption of Tanzania Premier League over the weekend has raised expectations that the Egyptian league can follow suit.
But various reports indicate that some Egyptian Premier League players remain concerned over returning to work while the virus is still uncontained, with Egypt being one of the African countries worst hit by the crisis.
