Egypt Premier League side Pyramids have confirmed the signing of national team captain Ahmed Fathi.
Pyramids were previously running the rule over the former Al Ahly player as they looked to bolster their defensive set-up ahead of the resumption of 2019/20 campaign.
Now, the club has confirmed that they have signed the player, weeks after Fathi opted not to renew his contract with the Red Devils.
“Pyramids have confirmed the signing of Egypt national team captain Ahmed Fathi whose contract with Al Ahly expired making him a free agent,” Pyramids confirmed on their official website.
The 35-year-old defender/midfielder made a total of 338 appearances for Al Ahly, scoring 24 goals and providing 61 assists in all competitions.
Fathi joined the Red Castle from English premiership side Sheffield United before going to Kuwait’s Kazma on loan.
He again spent six months on loan at Hull in the Championship in the 2012/13 season before re-joining the Cairo giants in 2015.
Since his Pharaohs debut in 2002, Fathi has been capped 129 times for the national team, winning three African Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles between 2006 and 2010.
Meanwhile, Egypt Football Association has proposed the reduction on the number of foreign players plying their trade in the first and second divisions.
The football governing body proposes for a reduction of foreign players spots in the Egyptian Premier League with clubs only be allowed four (4) foreign players, which will be a reduction by one.
For the second division clubs, the clubs can only sign two (2) foreign players, whilst the third division clubs are not allowed to sign any foreign players.
