Emmanuel Adebayor: Olimpia Striker Leaves Club After Four Months

Togo veteran striker Emmanuel Adebayor has left Paraguay outfit Club Olimpia by mutual consent.

Togo veteran striker Emmanuel Adebayor has left Paraguay outfit Club Olimpia by mutual consent.

The 36-year-old forward joined Olimpia in February after ending his brief spell with Turkish club Kayserispor in December.

But he only started four games and left Paraguay in March for Togo despite being warned by the club authorities not to risk travelling due to coronavirus pandemic.

The club now says his return to the South American nation posed significant health and safety problems.

“The Board of Directors of Club Olimpia wishes to inform its members, fans and the general public that a decision has been made by mutual agreement to terminate the contractual relationship with the player Emanuel Adebayor,” reads part of the club statement

“The pandemic situation due to Covid-19 virus puts the player at health risk to start his return to our country, with multiple flights, scales and quarantine measures.

“The economic situation the country is going through has not escaped Olimpia either, thus forcing us to make the best decision to protect the heritage of our institution and a guarantee to face the rest of the year.”

The 2008 CAF African Player of the Year’s move to Olimpia was the most surprising in his career after previously featuring in England, Spain, France and Turkey throughout his career.

His most prominent days came with Arsenal, with the forward playing over 100 Premier League matches for the club.

Olimpia was Adebayor’s 10th professional club since leaving his native Togo in 2001 to head to France, where he featured for Metz and Monaco before his move to England.
