2018 African Nations Championship Qualifiers

Ethiopia Handed a Walk-Over Win

Ethiopia was handed a 3-0 win walk-over in the second leg of the 2018 CAF African Nations Championships Qualifiers against Djibouti on Sunday, following the latter’s decision to withdraw from all continental competitions, taking the overall aggregate to 8-1.

This comes after the Shore Men of the Red Sea who suffered a 5-1 defeat to an uncompromising Ethiopian side in the first home game, prompted the FDF to disband the entire team.

The tough decision was made following a ‘never ending series of bad performances’ by the national side. Not only has Djibouti never qualified for any major tournament, the side had also recently taken a massive slump in form losing the last six matches by massive margins.

In an official statement, the FDF announced that the squad and coaching staff had been disbanded so as to shift the focus onto promising youngsters.

Ethiopia will now face Burundi or Sudan (whose match was cancelled) scheduled for 11 August 2017, to book a spot in next year’s CHAN Games to be held in Kenya.

In other games, Burundi was held by South Sudan to a 0-0 stalemate; Lesotho edged Comoros in a 1-0 win; Zimbabwe lost to Namibia in penalties while Angola capitalized on a first leg win to knock out Mauritius.
