Ethiopia Scale Up In Latest FIFA Rankings

Ethiopia national football team, the Walia Ibex, has moved up three places up in the latest rankings released by World Football governing body FIFA on August 12, 2021.

Despite not playing a game since May’s rankings, the East African charges are now placed in position 137, up from 140 with 1079 points.

Ethiopia will be back in action on September 1, when they face Ghana in a Group G opener of 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

The Walia Ibex remain the fifth best East African nation with Uganda remaining top despite stagnating at 84th  place after their failure to qualify for the Cup of Nations.

Kenya, who Uganda will face in 2022 World Cup qualifiers starting September, dropped two places to position 104th  while Rwanda moved to position 127th globally.

South Africa, who won the 2021 Cosafa Cup in July, moved two places up to position 73 rd globally and they remained as top-ranked nation from the southern region.

Senegal remain the best placed African country after moving  one place up to position 21st , eight place above Tunisia.

Reigning African champions Algeria have moved four places up to 30th while reigning Nigeria are down two places to 34th and fourth in Africa.

Worldwide, Belgium remained on top with Brazil moving second position , followed  by France, England and Portugal as  the best five in the world.
