Finidi George Appointed Enyimba Head Coach

Two-time Africa champions Enyimba FC have confirmed former Nigeria international Finidi George as their new head coach on a two-year contract.

Finidi replaces coach Fatai Osho who led the Peoples’ Elephants to a second-place finish in the recently concluded 2020-21 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League.

His official game as Enyimba head coach will be the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round fixture against Senegalese side Diambers FC in mid-October.

Finidi retired from football in 2004, and has since earned his UEFA A Licence which is one level below the highest qualification, the Pro Licence.

The 50-year-old previous coaching roles include director of international football at former club Real Betis and managed the youth team of Spanish side, Real Mallorca in 2013.

He had an illustrious career playing for Ajax, where he won eight trophies including the 1995 Champions League before moving to Spain to play for Real Betis and RCD Mallorca.

He also had a short stint in England with Ipswich Town in August 2001, where he failed to keep a place in the Town side and reached a settlement to leave in summer 2003

He returned for a second stint at Mallorca in January 2004 before hanging up his boots.

Finidi was part of Nigeria’s golden generation of football stars alongside Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Sunday Oliseh and Daniel Amokachi.

He represented the West African country in four Nations Cup tournaments, by achieving success in 1994, finishing runners-up in 2000 and third place in 1992 and 2002.
