Former Arsenal striker Christopher Wreh has been appointed as head coach of the Liberia squad that will participate in the 2019 West African Football Union (Wafu) Nations Cup next month in Senegal.

The 44-year-old, who won the Premier League and FA Cup double with Arsenal in 1998, will have Mouctarr Fofana as his assistant, while former Liberia international Sunday Sieh will serve as goalkeeping coach.

Wreh’s first assignment will be against Morocco who are the first guest side invited to a Wafu tournament, on 29th September.

Liberia beat Morocco 2-1 in an international friendly the last time the two sides met in July 1987.

The expanded tournament will feature 16 nations and kicks-off on 28 September with the final set for 13 October at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies.

Liberia are said to have put faith in the former international due to his past experience in handling their 2018 Wafu Under-20 squad as well as local top-flight side Nimba United.

During his playing career, Wreh won 36 caps for the Lone Stars scoring 11 goals and was in their squad for the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.

Domestically, Wreh turned for Invincible Eleven before signing for French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco as a youth. Later on, he had a loan spell at Guingamp where he rose to become the second top scorer for the club in the 1997 Coupe de France Final.

Wreh signed for Arsenal in the summer of 1997 for £300,000 in a move that was steered by former Manager Arsene Wenger.

He retired from international football around 2007 and was at that time playing for Liga Indonesia Premier Division side, Perseman Manokwari.
