Former Arsenal, Manchester City and Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor has been released from Coronavirus isolation in Benin.
The 36-year-old was under mandatory quarantine at an unnamed hotel in Cotonou after his attempt to return to his family in Togo was thwarted by the West African nation authorities in the process of fighting the spread of Covid-19.
Adebayor was part of 84 passengers who had arrived in Benin aboard an Air France flight before being placed into different isolation centres across the city.
But on Tuesday, the player was allowed to travel to Lome, without spending the required 14 days quarantine period at the facility.
Reports indicate that the Beninese Minister of Health Benjamin Hounkpatin aided Adebayor’s evacuation to his home country where he is expected to undergo self-isolation.
Adebayor was returning from his Paraguayan club Olimpia after the South American country was put into a partial lockdown in a bid to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
He had been advised by his club to stay in Paraguay during the health crisis but surprised the club officials by taking a decision to be with his family.
Adebayor joined Olympia in February having left Turks Kayserispor in December.
The forward made his breakthrough in Europe when he joined Arsenal from Monaco back in 2006 as he won the African Player of the Year award two years later.
Adebayor is Togo’s most famous player and scored 32 goals in winning 87 caps, and helped his country qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
