Former Equatorial Guinea national team head coach Daniel Guindos says he was “surprised” by the federation’s decision to sack him as manager.
Guindos, who was appointed last month, received the dismal news while on his way to Malabo on Thursday afternoon, with Frenchman Sebastien Migne appointed as the new head coach.
In a statement seen by Ducor Sports, Guindos expressed his disappointment at the FA’s decision to sack him without proper notification; “Last month I reached an agreement with the Federation of Equatorial Guinea to be their national coach. This was a project that I was passionate about and in which I was convinced that we were going to achieve great results. However, this adventure is over, as I have been informed that I am leaving my position without any justification.”
“Since I took charge of the national team, we have worked tirelessly in search of an ideal structure to realize the dream of a whole country, the qualification for the next African Cup,” adds the statement as translated from Spanish.
Guindos had already started preparing his team for this month’s double qualifiers against Tanzania and Tunisia by organising a friendly against Togo.
“The job to lead Nzalang Nationale to AFCON 2021 started with an international friendly against Togo in Marseille where we achieved more than a meritorious draw (1-1). However, all that is history,” he explained.
Guindos has now promised to take action by forwarding a complaint against Equatorial Guinea FA to FIFA, seeking justice for unlawful dismissal.
“I want to thank the commitment and support of the players, who at all times have been by our side and who have fought for our continuity, a gesture that we will never forget. Now it’s time to fight for justice and look forward in search of new projects.”
The Equatorial Guinea FA officials stated that the vastly experienced Guindos has resigned from the position after just three weeks after his appointment.
The 35-year-old’s most recent job was in Spain with local side AD Alcorcon B, who he left in June by mutual consent.
Equatorial Guinea’s position was Guindos maiden sojourn in Africa, having worked most of his career in Europe and particularly his native Spain.
