Steeve Elana’s hopes of playing for Guinea in Africa Cup of Nations is over after failing to establish where his family hails in the West African country.

The Guinean FA had been mulling over switching the 38-year-old’s allegiance to the Syli Nationale having seen the chance of playing for his birthplace, France, shut on him years ago.

Now plying his trade with Tours FC in the French second tier, Belgian gaffer Paul Put had planned to incorporate the shot-stopper into his Elephants’ set up to beef up his squad.

However, those plans were dealt a blow after Elana couldn’t tell where his parents or grandmother hailed from leading to his return to France without securing a Guinean passport.
