Gabon Cancels League Over Coronavirus

The Gabon Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) has decided to prematurely end 2019/2020 season due to coronavirus.

The Gabon Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) has decided to prematurely end 2019/2020 season due to coronavirus.

Gabonese football has been halted since mid-March because of the coronavirus outbreak with 5,871 confirmed cases.

And as the number of cases continues to rise, the FEGAFOOT announced on Friday that the current season has been rendered null and void.

“The management committee of the Gabon National Championship (LINAFP) in conjunction with club owners and managers has unanimously agreed to scrap the 2019/2020 season, for the sake of protecting the health of the players and officials in the various clubs, in line with the Covid-19 protocols,” the FEGAFOOT announced in a statement made available to Ducorsports.

Clubs had played six matches in the two groups of the championship, with Bouenguidi and AS Mangasport leading, when the league was halted in mid-March.

The national association has decided to nominate the two sides for the African club competitions as they were the representatives this season.

This cancellation means the 2019/20 season will end without relegation or promotion from the lower divisions.
