Gaborone United head coach Nikola Kavazovic has resigned from his position less than 48 hours after an incident at the end of team’s 1-0 loss to Jwaneng Galaxy, Ducor Sports understands.
The Serbian is said to have thrown in the towel following a fight that happened between him and the club chairman Boitumelo Nsunge moments after last Sunday’s Botswana Premier League Top 8 quarterfinal match.
His assistant Khalid Niyonzima, who also serves as the club’s goalkeepers coach, takes over on caretaker basis as the club scouts for a replacement. Briton Jamie Day and Brazilian Robert Oliveira Goncalves do Carmo lead the list of coaches who are likely to replace the Serb.
“Nikola has resigned, he has handed his resignation letter to the club director this afternoon. This has been coming and the management was aware he was on his way out,” a source from Gaborone United camp told Ducor Sports.

Nikola was appointed as Gaborone United coach on September on an eight months contract which was to run until the end of the season.
The tactician was previously in charge of South African side Free State Stars on a short term contract before he was fired due to relegating the club to the First Division.
The 44-year-old gaffer was not new in Botswana premiership as he once with Township Rollers during the 2017/18 season, guiding Mapalastina to the group stages of CAF Champions League.
During his stay at Rollers, he was lauded for transforming The Blues into a very formidable team that conquered the entire country.
The former AFC Leopards tactician holds a UEFA ‘A’ license and currently pursuing his UEFA Pro license. He has also coached both Zarkovo, Borac and Resnik youth and senior teams.
In 1998, Kavazovic graduate from Belgrade Sports University as the youngest football coach in SR Yugoslavia. He won the AFC President Cup with Istiqlol Dushanbe in 2012.
