Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder has formally asked the club to leave.

Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder Gaston Sirino has formally asked the club to leave. Ducor Sports has been reliably informed that the talisman sent shared his intentions with the Dstv Premiership club management on Thursday.

He was then asked to put his request in writing so that it is on the record, which he had already done late November.

Sources at Tshwane giants said the club told Sirino it wants him to stay for the remainder of the contract. It hinted that a legal battle could be coming and said it will not automatically grant the Uruguayan great his wishes.

There has been ongoing speculation about a possible move for Sirino to eight-time Champions League winners Al Ahly.

Earlier this month, Al Ahly had placed an offer and the PSL transfer window which Sundowns rejected and now their hopes remain on getting his signature at the beginning of January.

So far Sirino has featured for Sundowns in only the MTN8 quarterfinal loss to Bloemfontein Celtic and has missed all of their five DStv Premiership matches.

His absence has been linked to a hamstring injury by Sundowns though most of Johannesburg publications blame it to a fall-out with the club’s management.

Last season, Sirino played 41 games for Sundowns, scoring 13 goals and contributing with 10 assists as they retained the Absa Premiership title, won the Telkom Knockout and the Nedbank Cup to make up the domestic treble.

The 29-year-old arrived at Masandawana midway through the 2017/18 season from Bolivian side, Club Bolivar.
