The Ghana Premier League remains suspended as the league managers continue to wait on government directives to resume owing to the continued spread of the coronavirus.
The government announced the suspension of any gatherings while the Ministry of Sports closed down all sporting facilities as a means of combating the spread of the virus, essentially shutting down sports all over the country.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) had in mid-March announced that all football matches in the country, including the top tier, would be suspended for four weeks, but the situation currently does not allow for its return.
“The Executive Council at its meeting on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 decided that the status quo remains, stating that the Association is in various engagements with Government, the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the GFA Medical Committee, CAF and FIFA,” reads part of the statement.
“The Executive Council further decided that the Association will continue to monitor the situation and would revisit it on June 30, 2020 after a careful assessment and evaluation of the issue and to take further decisions.
“The GFA will consider all the factors at the time and take all the necessary decisions to ensure the safety of all participants and the smooth completion of the season.”
Ghana Premier League was scheduled to end on July 19th following a special premonition from Confederation of African Football (CAF) because of the initial normalization process of Ghana football.
CAF expected football leagues of all member committees to end in May, after which a three-month break was to follow.
But with the raising the number of infections still rising in the West African nation, there is uncertainty about the future of the championship.
