Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia have announced the appointment of Roberto Oliveira Goncalves do Carmo aka Robertinho as their new head coach ahead of the 2020/21 season.
The accomplished tactician replaces Steven George Pollack, who on Friday parted ways with the glamour club on mutual consent.
As Ducor Sports previously reported, Robertinho has signed a two-year contract having been heavily linked with Kenyan Premier League champions for the past six hours.
Robertinho beats several reported targets to the post, including former Harambee Stars team coach Sebastien Migne and ex-Botswana national team head coach Adel Amrocuhe.
“We are excited to announce the arrival of our new coach Roberto Oliveira from Brazil. He has had long coaching experience in Africa thus making him more conversant with African football. We think he will be a great asset in our quest to achieve better results on the field,” said Gor Mahia chairman Ambroise Rachier.
The 60-year-old becomes the third man in charge since Gor Mahia reached the quarter-final of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The former Rayon Sports coach expressed his excitement after landing the high-profile coaching job at the East Africa giants.
“After leaving Rayon Sports, I got three offers to come back to Africa but I turned them down…. When Gor Mahia came knocking, I couldn’t turn it down because I like the club…. I like their style because I have seen Gor Mahia play many times and even had a tie against them in CAF competition. I am happy to be offered the chance to coach the team,” said Roberto.
“Gor Mahia have won everything in local competition and it is about time to make a mark in CAF continental competitions. It will take the collective efforts of players, technical staff, and management to achieve what we want. I believe it can be done.”
Robertinho resigned as the head coach of Rayon in October 2019 after the club failed to agree with his agent on salary.
The former Brazil national team striker previously had stints in Tunisia where he was in-charge of Stade Tunisien and in Angola where he spent two seasons Angola’s Atlético Sport Aviação.
Gor Mahia have been training under the watch of assistant coach Patrick Odhiambo as they prepare for African Champions League preliminary round fixtures which will begin in November.
