Controversial Moroccan international Hamza Mendyl has issued an apology to a fan after he wrongfully said an insulting and offensive comment to him.
The FC Schalke 04 defender, was quick to warm his fingers to fire off a clapback to a follower, who he thought was throwing shade at him.
The fan had pointed out at the footballer’s performance in the midfield during the Morocco-Comoros game on Saturday, October 13, in Casablanca.
Even though the Instagram post has since been deleted, followers took screenshots and have been passing it around on the platform.
After realizing that his comment was unfounded, Mendly returned to Instagram to apologize and explained that he wasn’t in a good mood.
[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “I would like to apologize to the supporter I spoke to last night; I should not have made such comments, even if I was still under pressure due to Saturday’s game.” [/perfectpullquote]
“I will never allow myself to insult a supporter or his family, I know the love you have for our team and I will do everything to make you proud in the future. I accept your criticism, sorry. Forgive me,” Hamza regretted.
The Royal Moroccan Football Association (FRMF) is yet to comment on the development although it must be noted that several football bodies mostly act by expelling players from the team when they direct similar expletives to fans and members of the technical bench.
During the Saturday’s match of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Morocco beat Comoros 1-0, a result that disappointed their coach Herve Renard.
“I am disappointed with this performance tonight; our victory is due to a stroke of chance.”
The Atlas Lions played against the Islanders again on Tuesday this week, where they were held to a 2-2 draw in a match that was played in Moroni.
