Sadio Mane was this evening crowned Africa’s best beating off competitions from Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez.
The former Metz forward’s had been tipped to win the prize unlike in previous editions. When the sheet was unveiled, fans in the heart of Dakar watching proceedings of the awards being televised erupted in sheer delight.
The press back home also joined in the screaming. There were the obvious headings but one of the paper took it to some levels describing the Senegalese’s dethroning of Salah as “unprecedented” and “unmatched”.
“Sadio Mane Officially Rewarded,” The Seneweb captioned their article while Galsen matched a photo of Diouf, the time the Ex-Bolton man won the prize, and that of Sadio’s recent crowning picture, completed by the captivating line: “Sadio Mane On the Roof of Africa”.
Dakaractu and the O’bserverteur were not left out with each throwing in savouring compliments to suit the occasion.
Salah has shared the golden trophy the last four years with Aubameyang and Riyad Mahrez until his teammate ended that dominance.
According to Dakaractu, Mane, who scored a combined thirty-five goals in 2019 and finished joint top scorer on 22 goals last season, has his sights on matching the feats of Yaya Toure and Samuel Eto’o –the sole players to have won the gong in a row.
Sadio is the second Senegalese to scoop the prize after Diouf who, in the lead up to Mane’s crowning, said he was “thousand per cent” sure his countryman would be the winner.
