The South Africa rugby team failed to defend its HSBC World Rugby Sevens title in Sydney after losing to Australia 29-0 in the Cup final. The road to the final had been a clean one following the tremendous wins over Papua New Guinea (50-0), Spain (38-0), England (33-12), to set up a quarter-final clash against Kenya.
The South Africans were again relentless as they saw off the Kenyans (17-0) and again in the semi-finals, beating USA 35-7.
The final showdown against Australia was a much anticipated one with most South Africans believing the title defense was secure. Australia, however, had different plans as they routed South Africa with five tries without a reply ending the match 29-0. Despite losing embarrassingly, South Africa remain ranked Number one and were the team with the most points at 173.
