Former Cameroon national team coach Hugo Broos is set to become the new coach of DR Congo, subject to agreeing terms with the Democratic Republic of Congo Football Association (FECOFA), local media reports suggest.
Broos, who guided Cameroon to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Gabon, will officially take on the role if a financial agreement has been reached with the FECOFA.
The 69-year-old would succeed Christian Nsengi-Biembe, who was shown the door after failing to guide the Leopards to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.
Leopards Actu reports FECOFA has settled on the Belgian instead of compatriot Michel Georges Jean Ghislain Preud’homme who has been considered favourite for the role.
“The executive considered a report of the committee that was put up by the three member committee to appoint the new coach for DR Congo,” a source is quoted as saying by Leopards Actu.
“Our preference is Hugo Broos and Sebastien Migne is our second choice. We have not reached agreement with him yet but it is left with some small details which will be sorted out soon.”
Broos has vast experience as a manager, having won the Belgian Championship twice with Club Brugge and then again with Anderlecht. He has also enjoyed spells in Greece, Turkey and Algeria in recent years.
Should Broos accept the role, he will be expected to guide DR Congo to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The Leopards will face Tanzania, Madagascar and Benin in Group J of the first round of the African qualifiers that are set to begin in June this year.
