Mamelodi Sundowns gaffer Pitso Mosimane believes he probably saved the life of fan in the scuffle that marred their meeting with Orlando Pirates.
In what was a nail-biting fixture in the South African Premier Soccer League, the Orlando-Sundowns game had to be delayed for five minutes before half time.
It happened that a fan, sporting Sundowns colors, had crossed security lines and attacked the Orlando technical bench.
The incident triggered a scuffle between benches of the opposing teams before the security personnel tackled the supporter.
Harping on the incident as the league’s organizing committee promised to investigate, Pitso Mosimane said he probably saved the fan’s life whose actions caused the commotion.
“I saw a lot of black and white (Orlando players) coming to me so‚ what I am going to do? I’m going run or be swallowed? I had to attack. So I attacked. I pushed back.”
“The last time I saw people coming like that was when we won 6-0 here and I had to run for cover.”
“So I thought it’s the same thing and I said ‘what’s happening now’. But I saw one yellow person with a lot of black and white and I said I cannot let the yellow be swallowed also.”
“I must protect the yellow (the fan). It’s unfortunate I was the nearest one and I had to protect the yellow because he was chased by so many black and white people.”
“The poor guy was running and I thought let’s help this guy‚ you know. So I said this is just one guy‚ happy guy. That guy, if I didn’t go there, he was going to be swallowed. Probably I saved his life” he said.
Also dubbed The Brazilians, former African club champions Mamelodi are five points adrift of table-topping Orlando.
