Jwaneng Galaxy are keen to extend the contract of their coach Miguel de Costa, although the Botswana Premier League outfit’s board insists there is no rush.
De Costa is contracted to the Galaxy Stars until the end of the season but talks have not yet commenced about a renewed deal.
That is because the club does not expect De Costa to commit so soon, even though they remain optimistic that the Portuguese will have a long and prosperous future with the Botswana giants.
“We still have the FA Cup and the league to compete for. But our hope is that the coach will stay with us for more seasons,” Galaxy Star’s public relations officer Tankiso Morake told reporters.
Galaxy Stars have enjoyed a largely successful campaign under De Costa’s stewardship and are on the brink of winning the BTC sponsored league, though they hold a one-point gap over Township Rollers with four matches remaining.
However, doubts have been cast on De Costa’s long-term future by a section of fans despite the buzz created by the youthful coach who guided the team to Mascom Top 8 in his maiden season.
The 37-year-old has personally hinted that he is not sure if the contract will be extended as both parties are yet to meet over a new contract.
Speaking to Mmengi Online, he said: “I do not know what will happen (at the end of the contract) because you cannot pick things just like that.”
“I am a very straight and honest guy but ..there are a lot of things happening at the moment; my heart and soul are with Jwaneng Galaxy until the last minute of the season.”
De Costa had earlier been linked with vacant Botswana national team head coach job has been linked but in a previous interview, he denied any interest in applying for the position.
