Kenya started their CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup title defence on a bright note after beating Tanzania 1-0 in an explosive Group B match played on Sunday afternoon at StarTimes Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.

Harambee Stars went ahead as early as the fourth minute after Wamalwa played an inch-perfect ball for Hassan Abdallah, who needed no second invitation to send a powerful finish into the back of the net.

The two sides squared up for the third time this year, with Kenya being dominant in all occasions as Taifa Stars looked to end their losing streak against their northern neighbours.

Momentum piled for Tanzania and Kevin Kimani missed a big chance as he miskicked with the goal at his mercy after robbing Lucas Kikoti of possession.

Taifa Stars sprung to life when Paul Nonga’s header forced Samuel Odhiambo to the evening’s first save at the 28th minute, while Jonas Mkunde’s close-range volley hit the post seconds later.

Nonga threatened for an equalizer again at the half-hour mark when his low shot from the far side went through the legs of Joash Onyango, but Odhiambo’s outstretched hand redirected a corner as the opening half ended on a livelier note.

Tanzania goalkeeper, Aishi Manula, had to be at his best in the 53rd minute, as he pulled off a stunning stop to deny Kenneth Muguna from 12-yards out.

Harambee Stars should have doubled their lead in the 54th minute when Lawrence Juma played Abdallah through on goal, however, the Bandari midfielder managed to place his effort wide of the mark with only Manula to beat.

Tanzania nearly levelled matters in the 77th minute, as Mzamiru Said showed great control, before seeing his low effort palmed away by Odhiambo.

Harambee Stars managed to see off a late surge from Tanzania, including a powerful effort from Lucas Kikoti, to secure the win.

In another Group B opener which was played at Lugogo, Zanzibar and Sudan played to a 1-1 draw.

Kenya will next play against Sudan on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, before they wind up group stage action against Zanzibar on Saturday.

The top two teams from the group will proceed to the semi-finals, slated for Tuesday, December 17, 2019, after which the final and the third-place play-off will be played on Thursday, December 19, 2019.
