Kenya Captain Wanyama Donates Sanitising Kits To Needy Families

Kenya national team captain Victor Wanyama has shown generosity to slum dwellers in the capital Nairobi amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Kenya national team captain Victor Wanyama has shown generosity to slum dwellers in the capital Nairobi amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The 28-year-old Montreal Impact midfielder on Saturday donated sanitizing kits and foodstuffs to over 200 families in Mathare Slums in partnership with Kenya Red Cross.

A total number of confirmed cases in Kenya has reached 38, but this figure is continuing to increase, with flights to and from Europe now suspended.

Wanyama Foundation chief executive officer, Cynthia Wanyama, who coordinated the event said that they intend to reach out to more families in informal settlements in the coming days.

“We were overwhelmed as more numbers kept trickling in but we are glad to have played our part. This will go a long way in ensuring the 200 families in Mathare observe hygiene during this period that everyone is fighting coronavirus,” Cynthia said.

“Victor is very passionate about giving back to society having come from a very humble background himself. He is worried about the current situation and has promised to do all he can to help Kenyans in informal settlements get sanitizers and basic foodstuff,” she added.

It is not the first time Wanyama has made donations to informal settlements in Nairobi.

In 2019, he purchased a 40-seater bus for Country Bus FC, a Nairobi East County side, and Muthurwa Boxing Club.

He also awarded secondary school scholarship to a number of disadvantaged children which covers tuition fees, boarding and other related expenses for the four year period that they will be in school.

The Kenyan midfielder forward is currently training from home as a precautionary measure against the spread of the virus.

Wanyama, who now turns for Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact, has seven goals in 56 games for the Harambee Stars.

Before joining Montreal, he spent eight seasons in the Premier League playing for Southampton and then Tottenham Hotspur.
