Sofapaka surged into the eighth position in the Kenyan Premier League after their 3-1 win over Gor Mahia on Saturday afternoon.
The home side started very brightly with Nigerian import Promise Chinonso scoring the opener inside 28 seconds of play before Samuel Onyango levelled matters for Steve Pollack’s troops in the 12th minute after heading in Kenneth Muguna’s corner.
Sammy Imbuye nearly made it two in the 23th minute when he was slipped through on goal by Elli Asieche, but the striker was superbly denied in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
K’Ogalo, at the other end, came close to going ahead, but a goal-mouth scramble ended with defender Charles Momanyi’s close-range striker cleared off the goal-line.
Ameyaw Nanan should have made it 2-1 for Batoto Ba Mungu in the 27th minute after going through on the left side of the box but his low strike was palmed away by David Mapigano.
In the 36th minute, Clifton Miheso worked his way into the box from the right flank but saw his 16-yard shot well-saved by the keeper.
Sofapaka continued to dictate terms thereafter, but could not add to the scoreline before the break.
Seven minutes into the second half Chinonso added his second from Asieche’s well-delivered corner, heading it past Mapigano.
On the hour mark Kenneth Muguna almost found an equaliser when some sublime skill saw him break into the box, but he fired his low 14-yard shot inches wide of the target.
The result was put beyond doubt in the 84th minute after poor timing from Mapigano invited Ikekhai Sunday who fired a thunderbolt into the top corner from 22-yards out to make it 3-1.
Gor Mahia tried to find some consolation after that, but Sofapaka held on for a comfortable win.
