The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has secured Sh 1.2 billion (over 11m US Dollars) five-year sponsorship deal for the top-tier league.

BetKing, a wholly-owned Nigerian betting company was announced as the sponsor of Kenyan Premier League by FKF President Nick Mwendwa at a press conference here Thursday.

The top tier has been without a major sponsor after the deal with SportPesa ended following their exit from Kenyan market.

Mwendwa said the new sponsorship deal will help the growth of football in the country as each club is set to get a grant of Sh8 million per year, a figure amounting to $74,000.

“Under the partnership, each participating club will be entitled to at least eight million (Kenyan shillings) annually from the federation,” said Mwendwa,

“Our players and club officials have had it rough over the past few years because of an underfunded league.”

The FKF has secured the deal in earnest before the start of the 2020/21 season which will mark the first campaign the federation which will now be referred to as the BetKing Premier League (BPL).

BetKing will also sponsor the end of season awards gala and plans are underway to launch Super 16, a tournament that will involve top eight teams from the two top leagues, the BPL and NSL.
