Kenyan Defender Joseph Okumu Set To Move To Belgian Side Gent

A former Free States Stars player is close to sealing a move to Belgian First Division side KAA Gent, with a medical set to be concluded.

Reports have indicated that Kenyan international Joseph Okumu will make a move from Swedish top tier club IF Elfsborg to Gent in the Belgium Pro League.

It’s understood that the deal is worth $4million and talks for the move to be concluded are at an advanced stage, as revealed by a source at his current club.

French League One side Lorient made the first move for the Kenyan, with L’Equipe reporting that they have tabled an offer of €2.5millon.

Divisional rivals Reims are also monitoring the situation together with Scottish duo of Rangers and Celtic.

Okumu left Free State Stars in 2017 after spending two years at Bethlehem and made an impact in Sweden, establishing himself as a regular in the IF Elfsborg side during the two seasons he has been there.

In the ongoing season, the lanky centre-back made nine appearances in all competitions, providing one assist in the eleven goals that Elfsborg has scored.

The lanky defender started his professional football career at Chemelil Sugar FC in 2014 joining straight from Kakamega High School.

He later joined Free State Stars in South Africa in 2016 before moving to USA to join AFC Ann Arbor which plays in the fourth tier in 2018.

He impressed and was soon in the books of Real Monarchs, the reserve team for MLS side Real Salt Lake.

Last season, Okumu helped Elfsborg to qualify for the Europa League after finishing second in the Swedish Allsvenskan.

The 23-year old Harambee Stars defender has made 34 appearances for IF Elfsborg in all competitions since 2019.
