Kenyan Stuns Favourites at the IAAF World U-18 Championships

Kenya’s George Meitamei Manangoi won gold in the 1500m final after putting up a stellar performance in the last 200m of the race, during the ongoing IAAF World U-18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

With 300m to go, the top two slots should have been sealed by Ethiopia’s Abebe Dessassa who was in the lead followed by compatriot Belete Mekonen.

But the light instantly burnt out when Manangoi pulled out his last card and was shoulder to shoulder with the Ethiopians with 200m to go.

The Kenyan added gear and raced to the finish line in 3:47:53. Silver went to Dessassa 3:48:65 while Mekonen won bronze in 3:50:64.
