A former international footballer for Kenya and a number Kenyan Premier League clubs has died at the age of 33.
Kevin Opiyo Oliech, who is younger brother to former Nantes striker Deniss Oliech, died in Germany after being in and out of hospital.
He reportedly suffered from cancer in 2016 and has struggled with the disease for the past few years.
Opiyo’s career was dominated with spells in Kenya notably Mathare United, Nakumatt, Nairobi City Stars, Ushuru and Tusker.
He also played in Germany for fifth tier sides KFC Uerdingen 05 and Alemannia Aachen before hanging his boots.
Opiyo earned his first call-up to the Kenyan national team in 2005 and future for Harambee Stars in several World Cups and Nations Cup qualifiers under coach Twahir Muhiddin.
His former club Mathare United turned to social media to show their respect.
“We would like to pass our condolences to the Oliech family following the death of Kevin ‘Yeboah’ Oliech on Sunday evening,” Mathare posted on official Facebook page.
“Kevin was part of our 2008 title-winning squad and always gave his best whenever he donned the yellow and green jersey. He continued the legacy of the Oliech family at Mathare United adding to Dennis Oliech’s goals and Andrew Oyombe’s composure in midfield.
“His death is a big blow to the Mathare United fraternity and we would like to urge all our alumni to support the Oliech family during these tough times.”
Nairobi City Stars said their thoughts were with Opiyo’s friends and family at this “sad time.”
