Liberia Extends Football Coach Peter Butler’s Contract

The Liberia Football Association announced on Tuesday it had agreed a one-year contract extension with coach Peter Butler.

The Liberia Football Association announced on Tuesday it had agreed a one-year contract extension with coach Peter Butler.

Butler, who has been in-charge since August 2019, will be expected to lead Liberia to qualification for 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Under coach Butler the Lone Star have recorded mixed results that saw them fail to make to the group stage of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, falling to Chad on penalties in preliminary round.

However, the Englishman steered them a group stage qualifiers spot for Qatar World Cup after beating rivals Sierra Leone 3-2 aggregate.

In the first match played at SKD Stadium, Butler’s charges won 3-1 before going down by a solitary goal in return match in Free Town.

Butler has been credited for building new foundations for Lone Star by assembling a young team which has experienced players.

The former Botswana coach, who has also worked in Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, South Africa and Thailand, took over the Liberian job from Thomas Kojo after signing a one-year contract.

Liberia will return to competitive football in May 2021 where they will continue with their quest for a ticket to the next FIFA World Cup.

The Lone Star will battle it out against Nigeria, Central African Republic, and Cape Verde in the Group C, with the top team progressing to the next round of the qualifying tournament.
