After falling to Zimbabwe in a 2019 African Nations Cup qualifiers, the Lone Stars of Liberia return to another 90 minutes of action, this time, in the 2018 African Nations Championship qualifier against Mauritania this Sunday, at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia.
Recovering from a 3-0 demolition in Harare will be the point of focus for Liberia following days of intense preparation under the supervision of head coach, James Salinsa Debbah and the technical team.
A win for the Lone Stars will not only secure an advantage, it will also level the head-to-head record between the two countries with Mauritania leading with a better record of three wins and one draw, in the last six meets.
The last time the two countries met was in 2012 in an international friendly both home and away with Mauritania collecting all six points.
A defeat for the Lone Stars will increase calls for Debbah’s resignation after many supporters have criticized Liberia’s celebrated soccer star for his poor selection and pairing of players while away to Zimbabwe.
Liberia will travel to Mauritania for the return leg on July 23, 2017, a crucial match that will determine who meets either The Gambia or Mali in the second round of Zone West A.
