Libya move top of their 2022 World Cup qualifying group following a 2-1 win over Gabon at the Benina Stadium in Benghazi on Wednesday night.
Andre Poko shot the Panthers into the lead on the 11th minute with a beautiful volley but the Mediterranean Knights drew level seventeen minutes later though a powerful header by defender Ali Salama.
Sanad Al Ouarfali broke Gabon hearts while becoming the Libya hero with a 89th minute winner, putting the result beyond doubt.
In the other group game, Egypt defeated Angola 1-0 at home with Al Ahly danger man Magdi Afsha bagging the all important goal from the spot.
The win took Libya on the top of Group F on goal difference from Egypt while Gabon remain at the bottom of the group.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang nearly placed Gabon ahead in the fifth minute but Libya goalkeeper Muhammad Nashnoush was on hand to keep out the striker powerful header.
Anthony Mezui was then called upon in the ninth minute, as he pulled off a stunning reflex save to keep out Guelor Kanga’s header from six-yards out.
Gabon went ahead three minutes later when he drove a powerfully volley from 20-yard past diving Nashnoush.
Libya responded shortly after with their equalizer from Ali Salama’s header after a corner kick.
Substitute Antony Oyono almost made an immediate impact in the 62nd minute but his left-footed effort from the edge of the area sailed inches over the crossbar.
Aubameyang nearly gave Gabon the lead in the 78th minute but the Arsenal forward managed to head over the crossbar from six-yards out.
The Panthers for the second in the remaining stages, but were let down by some poor finishing by Mario Lemina , who squandered another headed chance in the 85th minute.
Two minutes into injury time, Sanad Al Quarfali took advantage of a counter attack and nodded home an easy ball to give the Mediterranean Knights a precious victory that put them on top of the group.
