It has been eight years since Malawi national football team, the Flames, last appeared in the Africa Cup of Nations. After a promising start of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers, the Flames remain optimistic as they strive to make it to next year’s edition of the Nations Cup.
Placed in Group B along with reigning African champions Cameroon, Comoros, and Morocco, the Flames are leveled on points with Cameroon after a 1-0 win over Comoros last year June through midfielder Gerald Phiri Jr’s lone goal.
Walter Nyamilandu, president of the Football Association of Malawi, believes that it is time the South Eastern African nation made history in the football arena.
“This is your chance to make history. Don’t fear and have an inferiority complex, the country believes in you. Go bring the three points,” president Nyamilandu urged the national team prior to their departure to Casablanca, Morocco.
“If we are to be counted as a good team in Africa we have to beat the best and this is the time to be counted,” he said.
In their last appearance at the AFCON, the Flames poorly performed after finishing bottom of Group A behind group winners Angola, runners-up Algeria and Mali. It will be a tough encounter for the Flames, as they hold a poor record against their next opponents.
Out of the eight meetings between the two nations, the Malawians only recorded a win and a draw with the Moroccans claiming five wins.
The Flames will arrive in Casablanca later today for the showdown.
