South Africa Premier Soccer League giants Mamelodi Sundowns have strengthened their midfield reserves with the signing of highly-rated Lesedi Kapinga‚ the club announced on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old midfielder made 45 appearances for Black Leopards over the past two seasons, scoring six goals and becomes coach Pitso Mosimane’s second signing before the resumption of PSL.
In a statement released by the club on Thursday, Kapinga has penned a five-year deal.
The announcement comes a day after Lidoda Duvha opted against keeping Kapinga beyond the expiry of his contract so that he could finish the season.
“Lesedi Kapinga has joined the rest of the Mamelodi Sundowns team in camp (based in Rustenburg) after parting ways with Black Leopards earlier this week,” read the statement.
As expected, Kapinga is ineligible to play for his new team as the season is not officially concluded.
However, the midfielder will start training after seven days of self-quarantine as part of Covid-19 protocol and then get registered with PSL as soon as the window opens.
“The new signee has been welcomed by everyone in camp, digitally, as he is currently in isolation as part of the Covid-19 protocols and will interact with the rest of the squad in person once his isolation period is completed,” revealed the club.
Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, gave a perspective on the club’s recruitment plan when he welcomed the midfielder.
“Lesedi is a good young prospect and we are looking at getting as many young players as we can. He fits the programme with his age and the style of play. He is the type of player who likes combination play and loves one on one and taking defenders on. He scores goals also and I wish him all the best,” the coach told the club website.
Sundowns are expected to make a few more signings at the end of the season.
